Last year, Hilo High School coordinated a Career Pathways Fair, which impacted the root of the
problem of juvenile delinquency by helping high school students develop a focus in their lives.
The fair was also intended to help youth learn essential skills to contribute to our community.
This year, Waiakea High School and Na Leo O Na'Opio (a youth organization focused on the problem of drugs and juvenile delinquency) hosted the Second Annual Career Pathways Fair.
The main objective of the career fair was to provide freshmen and sophomore students from East
Hawaii high schools with information about various career options. The fair will also help them
realize that classes they are currently taking in high school have a direct impact on their future careers. The UH Institute for Astronomy, including the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) had a large presence at the fair with exhibits spanning 3 tables, covering careers in computer engineering, electronics engineering, astronomy, machine work and (believe it or not) outreach. Over 600 students from 12 public and charter schools attended the event.
