conduct their regular nightly stargazing program throughout the evening.
CONTACT: David Byrne at (808) 961-2180For the first time ever, the W. M. Keck Observatory in Waimea will let the public "eavesdrop"
on astronomical observations as they come in from the Deep Impact Mission. This will provide
a rare opportunity for the public to share in the thrill of discovery that makes modern astronomy
so compelling. The event will take place in the Hualalai Lecture Theater from 7 to 10pm on Sunday,
July 3rd, 2005."We at Keck are very excited about our participation in this unique astronomical event," said
Dr. Frederic Chaffee, director of the W. M. Keck Observatory. "All the major telescopes on
Mauna Kea are working together to be certain that we use the best capabilities of each facility.
The data we obtain will be made publicly available as soon after the event as possible so that
astronomers all over the world can begin to digest and interpret the results."Live images from the NASA Deep Impact spacecraft will be broadcast to a large display screen

in Waimea. A remote-control link to the Keck II control room in Waimea will let people observe real-time
action during the event. On-screen displays from the instrument control panels will let the public see the
same screens the astronomers will see. An astronomer will host the evening's events to explain the action
throughout the night. Weather permitting, telescopes will be available for comet observing from Waimea.Deep Impact Outreach Program will begin at 6:30 PM, and feature a panel of speakers who will give

mini-presentations and commentary throughout the evening on topics such as planetary astronomy,
comets, solar system evolution, astrobiology, etc.
